Concept + Experience
R&R&R hut combines snow and rigid insulation to create a grounded and sheltered yet airy space. The design is inspired by how construction workers sit on a piece of foam for coffee breaks when it’s cold outside. Sitting on this hut’s cut foam benches will warm skaters or walkers by insulating their body heat. A slot at eye level allows users to see the prairie horizon in every direction from an interior bathed in light all day.
Regular sheets of rigid pink foam insulation are optimized to be reused elsewhere after the warming hut is removed from the ice. The reused foam will ideally be sold, making its net cost very low. Minimal glue is involved, and instead, regular rebar will join layers of foam with friction, allowing the top of the hut to float above the bottom on slender steel “legs.”
