Practice

D’Arcy Jones founded his studio in Vancouver in 1999. Since then, D’Arcy Jones Architects (DJA) has refined an inventive, constantly evolving design process. Our studio practice is recognized for its design excellence. We are known for our clarity, construction detailing, and experimentation with architecture’s artful aspects. Our studio’s ideas and responses to contemporary culture have earned publications and awards nationally and internationally.

Practice honours include the Ronald J. Thom Award for Early Design Achievement from the Canada Council for the Arts, an AIBC Emerging Firm Award, and an RAIC Emerging Architectural Practice Award. Project honours include an AFBC Design Excellence Award, AIBC Lieutenant Governor Award of Excellence Medals, Canadian Architect Awards, and a Vancouver Urban Design Award. Our studio’s Pearl Block infill housing was recently awarded a 2024 Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize as an Outstanding Project. DJA works at many scales, focusing on housing, commercial spaces, and projects for the arts.

Our current studio combines research and practice, expanding on doctoral case studies that embrace irreverent thinking by questioning what we sometimes accept without scrutiny. Our design process focuses on a new methodology that optimistically questions the status quo by probing culture, craft, aesthetics, utility, and chance.
